Rajat Sharma (born on 18th February 1957) is an Indian journalist and editor-in-chief of India TV which is a Hindi news channel. He’s also the owner and chairman of the same. His channel is the most-watched news channel in India. Rajat is well-known for his show called Aap Ki Adalat on his channel.

He has hosted more than 750 celebrities on his show and discussed various aspects in detail with them. His show is the longest-running show in the history of Indian television. He has been awarded the Best Anchor Award a number of times and he even received the Indian Television Academy Lifetime Achievement Award. Rajat Sharma is currently the president of the News Broadcasters Association Of India (NBA) and vice president of Strategic Affairs of The Indian Broadcasting Foundation.

Early Life and Background

Rajat Sharma was born and brought up in Delhi, India. He comes from a very humble background and has spent his entire childhood in extreme poverty. He has six brothers and a sister. He used to live in a 100sq cm room with his parents and siblings without the luxury of electricity or running water. Even so he was very hard working and good in studies. He used to study under the light of the lamp post of Sabzi mandi railway station. He started his early education from Shri Sanatan Dharma Middle School but later moved to Ramjas school in Karol Bagh, Delhi.

After completing his schooling managed to get good marks and got admission in Shree Ram College of Commerce in Delhi. Mr Arun Jaitley, the former finance minister of India was his senior in college. He also helped Rajat financially in paying his fees. He was also amongst his close friends and helped him ideologically a number of times.

Rajat Sharma is married to television producer, Ritu Dhawan. He got married in the year 1997. Their couple has been living together happily ever since. They both are very supportive of each other and have children together too.

Career

Rajat Sharma started giving tuitions to kids in order to be able to submit his college fees. Soon after he completed his master’s degree, he met Janardan Thakur. Janardan had just quit Ananda Bazar Patrika, hired Rajat as a researcher in order to help him start his new syndicate column. After that, he joined the Onlooker Magazine as a trainee and later in 1985, became its editor.

After becoming the editor, he shifted to Mumbai. After three years, he left onlookers and joined the Sunday observer as an editor and then left that as well to join The Daily. Later in 1992, he met Zee TV’s Subhash Chandra during a flight to Delhi and that’s where the concept of the show Aap ko Adalat took shape. The first episode of the show came in 1993 which was shot with the former chief minister of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav. Till now, Rajat has interviewed more than 750 celebrities, politicians etc. on his show. It is the longest-running show in India’s television history. Apart from Aap ki Adalat, he also hosts the prime time show Aaj Ki Baat on India TV at 9 pm every day.
